Keyboard layout control breaks if set directly by the user via `setxkbmap`
I encounter on Ubuntu 18.04, that switching the keyboard layout via gnome and directly via the X Keyboard extension (setxkbmap) are in a way mutually exclusive:
- Via gnome, no
MappingNotify
is being fired (but the switching works for all windows, as intended) - Via
setxkbmap
, the switching works, but thereafter nothing in gnome is able to regain the ability to switch keyboard layouts for the remainder of the session (not the designated key nor the switching widget on the menu bar).

Not entirely sure it could be considered an issue regarding gnome, but would be ever so delighted to have your input. Either way it could be framed as an interoperability issue or interoperability limitation.
Many thanks!!
