Use RandR monitors instead of outputs
Not sure if this belongs here or gnome-settings-daemon or somewhere else but...
I've read Gnome uses RandR for X server and monitor configuration. It would be great if Gnome respected RandR's concept of monitors instead of just outputs. Since RandR 1.5, we have the option to create a new monitor from multiple outputs or split one output into multiple monitors via the xrandr --setmonitor
option.
For my particular need, I have an LG 5K display that shows up as two separate RandR outputs. I want to stitch these together into one contiguous monitor so Gnome draws one desktop/one workspace across the entire display.
I've been experimenting with the following .xinitrc
:
xrandr --setmonitor LG5K 5120/800x2160/330+0+0 DP-1,DP-2
# exec openbox # works
export XDG_SESSION_TYPE=x11
export GDK_BACKEND=x11
exec gnome-session # doesn't work
