Simplify Ethernet network interface naming
Currently, GNOME Control Center displays Ethernet network interfaces with a technical naming convention that can be confusing for many users. For example, they are shown as "Ethernet (enp4s0)" and "Ethernet (enp42s0)". This naming comes from the network interface names assigned by the Linux kernel, but it is not intuitive for end-users.
It is proposed to simplify the naming of Ethernet network interfaces in GNOME Control Center to display them in a more straightforward and understandable way. For example, they could be shown as "Ethernet" and "Ethernet 2".
This simplification of the naming convention is similar to what is done in other operating systems like Windows 11 and KDE Plasma.
Examples:
Windows 11
In Windows 11, Ethernet network interfaces are shown with simple names like "Ethernet" and "Ethernet 2".
KDE Plasma
In KDE Plasma, Ethernet network interfaces are also shown with simple names like "Wired connection 1" and "Wired connection 2".
This simplification of the Ethernet network interface naming in GNOME Control Center would improve the user experience by making the information more understandable and easier to identify for end-users.
