network: VPNs list and details do not display which protocol is used after setup
Once a VPN connection has been set up in Network
, no information about which protocol is used is displayed anymore, whether in the VPN connections available or in the settings of one.
This seems quite strange since, when prompted to set up a VPN connection, users have all the information displayed clearly.
Here is a personal example (only one VPN is currently used, but 3 more will be set up in the next few months for private and professional use):
Above is a list of available VPN connection, with one OpenVPN connection setup. The redacted part only obfuscate the given name, no information about the protocol used is displayed.
No panel of the VPN connection settings window, including Details
, displays the protocol used.
Displaying the protocol could help, for example, identify which connection is which or what protocol is being used, especially when importing from a file that the VPN users did not generate themselves.
Moreover, especially in this day and age of remote work, the fact that having a private VPN has become mainstream and that many organizations are switching from, say, OpenVPN to Wireguard, this seems important to display for end users.
N.B. I know that Wireguard support is not yet implemented in Settings
.
Steps to reproduce:
- Open GNOME Settings.
- Click on
Network
. - Look at the
VPN
list and browse the settings of a setup VPN connection.
