How to install pre-built manpages?

Description
glib-2.44.1 (and previous) suurce tarballs appear to include pre-generated manpages (docs/reference//.1, as listed in their respective Makefile.am man_MANS variables). According to ./configure --help, there is an option: --enable-man generate man pages [default=auto]
I don't want to generate them, as it pulls in a large build-depends tree of xslt/docbook, and I already have generated copies. But I --disable, the manpages are not even installed. If I --enable, my configure later fails because I don't have the necessary xslt/docbook stuff. Is there no way to install the pre-existing manpage files?
In the Makefile.am, the whole definition of man_MANS is protected by "if ENABLE_MAN", rather than just the generator details. If I make man_MANS always defined and use --disable-man, I get the pregenerated manpages installed, consistent with "generate" in that flag's definition.
