Hi,
could it be possible to visualize more explicitly objects which are off-canvas?
See the attached mock-up which proposes the use of opacity to communicate what's on-canvas and what's off-canvas. Opacity+desaturation could work too.
The layer in the image contains a full red circle which has been moved partially off-canvas. Right now gimp shows only the part on-canvas.
I know that if the layer becomes the active one GIMP shows its full bounding box and this can be used to see if one layer is off-canvas, but a global mechanism could show more quickly what is off-canvas.
A similar approach could be used in the Navigation dialog: https://docs.gimp.org/en/gimp-navigation-dialog.html
This is also related somehow to https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=726718 but I would not consider it a duplicate.
Thanks, Antonio
