Hi.
Currently user if need to split picture file into pieces by using GIMP, he/she need to do following:
(Let we suppose that user scanned a book composed from 500 pages by using every face to face pages be scanned per every single scanning process, so he/she will get 250 files)
- user should go to image → guide & select “vertical” & 50%
- user should go again for image → Transform → guillotine
This is O.K if user deal with few number of files like 4 or 5. But in this example (250 files) the case will be morbid because:
-
user need to repeat guide (reset at “vertical”) for every of these 250 files (guide not saved by GIMP),
-
user need to use “export” or “export as” or “save” …. for every new piece (in our example user need to use “export” for 500 time: 250 X 2 = 500) ! Even in case of single file or 2, why user need to “export” or “save” every new piece by independent “export” or “save” click?!
-
there is no option to select fixed output path for export or saving new pieces, & currently user need to select his/heir folder each time for each new piece (in our example user need to reselect location of export or saving for 500 time!),
-
at present GIMP arrange new pieces from left to right. This is good for Latin books. But for Arabic or Hebrew it will be very useful if GIMP add ability to rearrange new pieces from right to left, otherwise Arabic or Hebrew user will need to renumber new pieces & this will be non convenient in case of huge file number (like 500)
-
currently GIMP does not support multi-page file. Suppose user scanned book using multi-page file output so that at end of scanning user get single (multi-page) tiff or pcx file composed from 250 page.
My suggestion is to re-design guillotine function as following:
There is completely free program called Irfanview: www.irfanview.com
It has excellent “export image tiles (split image)….” which correspond to “guillotine” of GIMP. Go to toolbar of Irfanview, then select from it options then from options menu select “export image tiles (split image)...” & see the dialog.
Please open screenshot which show this dialog.
Here, in Irfanview every thing is simple:
-
user select row & columns number
-
select format to be used in export of new pieces
-
user select fixed output path to use in export or save
-
support multi-page file “Extract all pages (if multipage file)”
-
and most importantly the user preference in this dialog remain remembered by user & user need not to reset it after exit from program unless he/she change his/heir preferences.
(Please notice that “right to left” arrangement in Irfanview is still under development & will be included in next releases)
Irfanview unfortuantly not available for Linux as native version. User need to use WineHQ to run Irfanview on Linux & this will make Linux PC vulnerable for viruses & it will be great if GIMP guillotine function be as that of Irfanview
Best
