Adding layer groups to existing project increases file size up to 70%
Environment/Versions
- GIMP version: 2.99.14
- Package: Gimp project beta flatpak
- Operating System: Linux
Description of the bug
I have a project with around 400 layers. It saves to 37.4 GiB. With no other changes I added 9 layer groups and put the layers into these groups. I then saved the file again. The new file size is 40.9 GiB which is an increase of roughly 10% for no actual change in the graphical data in the file. Either one of two things may have happened:
- Each layer group needs additional storage space that amounts to 3.5 GiB for 9 layer groups, OR...
- The file compression becomes less efficient when layers are divided up into layer groups.
Reproduction
Is the bug reproducible? Always
Reproduction steps:
- Create a project with no layer groups
- Save the project
- Add layer groups for layers and see how the file size changes
…
Expected result: The file size should not change much or at all as layer groups are just a few extra entries in the layer list occupying a handful of extra bytes.
Actual result: Increased file size for no obvious reason
