Feature: convert an image to a different compositing space, with minimal changes to the appearance and layer structure
Operating System: All
Description of the feature
GIMP has two different compositing spaces: linear and perceptual. It also has "legacy" layers, which behave more or less like perceptual space. The compositing space affects the way blending is performed. In legacy/perceptual space, placing a 50% opacity white layer above a 100% opacity black layer will create a 50% grey. This is what most people would expect. In linear space, it will produce 73% grey. The default is linear space. Changing the space changes the appearance of the image.
I am requesting a tool to change the compositing mode of a layer (or an entire image) without changing the appearance or layer stack-up of the overall image.
Use cases
-
I have old XCF files in legacy mode and I want to convert it to linear space for future editing.
-
I need to export individual layers from a linear XCF and composite them in an external application which does not support linear space, in combination with other graphics which also aren't linear.
(In other words, conversion in both directions.)
