Problems with placing points on Curves

When using Curves, when trying to place new points, two points can't be placed close together, and "clicking" to place a point produces odd/wrong results:
If one point has been placed on the Curve, and an attempt is made to place a second point anywhere near the first point, the two points are merged, with the second point replacing the first point. This make fine control over tonality impossible.
Placing a point on the Value channel also results in points being placed on the Red, Green, and Blue channels. Often these Channel points get slightly out of alignment with one another, requiring that the Red, Green, and Blue channels be reset. This is time-consuming. It seems to me that placing a point on the Value channel shouldn't automatically place points on the Red, Green, and Blue channels.
When attempting to click-place a point in the shadows of an image, the resulting "Curve" goes parallel to the x-axis, not just in the Value channel but also in the Red, Green, and Blue channels, so all four channels need to be reset.
Because click-placing a point in the shadows doesn't work, the only way to put a control point in the shadows seems to be to place the point directly on the Curve but not in the shadows and then move it to where it ought to be. But in fact when adjusting shadow tonality this leaves the use to guess how to align the point with the proper place on the histogram.
Placing a point on the Curve can produce a sudden local bend in the Curve, which I think accounts for the fact that sometimes the layer histogram shows spikes after a Curves adjustment.
