Suggestion: Option to Toggle Non-destructive Erasing and Pixel Data
Gimp has a feature that makes it so if you erase pixels to transparency, the color information of the new transparent pixels remains intact. By simply using Anti-erase, it can revert transparent pixels back to the opaque color it originally had so long as it hasn’t been overlapped by another opaque color.
I don’t how long Gimp had that feature because I have never used it: I prefer just erasing and undoing. That feature was never a problem for me until I updated Gimp to the latest version as well as updating my Windows 8.1 computer. Whatever the updates did, made the non-destructive erasing feature very intrusive.
I’ve used Gimp to make and edit video game sprites: I don’t know why, but Gimp was my favorite for sprite design and simple art editing. Now, I’m not sure if I should use Gimp anymore because of how the alpha-colors ruin the sprites when transferring from Gimp to a game engine. I did ask around and found some good workarounds, but they are all temporary solutions for a problem that will always come back after I do some editing in Gimp.
All I want is the option to turn off non-destructive erasing and the option to erase pixel data automatically. I just want those options to be “toggle-able” at least, so people who want to use these features can still use them, while sprite designers like me can turn them off to prevent “overlapping old and new pixels” when transferring sprites to other programs. Either that, or give Gimp’s clipboard the option to never read pixel data and the alpha channel will always be black or a single color whenever copy/pasting layers to other programs.
