Lens Distortion needs bigger preview and overlay grid

Description
My Nikon 18-135mm zoom has "generous" amounts of geometric distortion at the ends of the zoom range which I tend only to fix when the shot contains enough straight lines to make it obvious.
In Photoshop CS2 the adjustments are fairly quick because a grid is overlayed so I know when I've corrected it enough. I'd like to see the same in GIMP's Lens Distortion plug-in because it is better - I cannot completely fix distortion with PS because it doesn't have the separate "main" vs. "edge" settings that GIMP does.
In the meantime I've taken to holding up a ruler to my monitor.
Of course the idea; would be a capability to read a database (flat text file really) of lenses/f-stop/focal length and plug-in parameters - but that's probably a job for a 3rd party plug-in.
