Shaped gradients should be able to ignore layer boundaries

Description
When using the Gradient tool to fill a selection, I have noticed that when you select a Shaped fill, if the chosen selection extends past the current layer's boundaries, not only is the selection cropped to that layer but the shaped gradient fill is restricted to the visible selection area as well. Last night I wanted to fill a selected area with a shaped gradient that extended past the boundaries of the given layer, and the only way to accomplish that was to manually expand the layer boundaries to encompass the whole selection, apply the gradient, and then crop the layer back to its original size.
Shaped gradients applied across a selection should have the option to "Ignore layer boundaries" when the selection extends past the edge of the visible image or layer (similar to the "Shrink from image borders" option available from the '(Image) > Select > Shrink...' menu command).
