zoom-dependent display grid

Description
I am suggesting that The GIMP improve how its grid functions. I believe it should be enhanced to have a sort of zoom-based grid (optional choice of course). A grid that shows more and more of itself or less and less depending on if youre zooming in or out. In short: It would be a nice feature enhancement to have The GIMP do grids more like Paint.NET. The current problems with The GIMP's grids become apparent when working on small pieces like 32x32 pixels, setting the grid to 1x1 pixel blocks and then zooming from like 500% to 100% to only see a black canvas. I feel lots of people can benefit from this. I mean what if someone wanted to redesign The GIMP's icons in it? It would become difficult since the grid is a very convenient thing at small resolutions and zooming in and out does not work very nicely with the grid set to smaller pixels.
Other information: For reference Paint.NET can be found at: http://www.eecs.wsu.edu/paint.net/ unfortunately it is Windows only.
