Investigate replacing xml2po by itstool or po4a
We are still using xml2po to combine po translations with our XML documentation. Although the original xml2po has been deprecated for a long time, the version we use was also forked long ago, and we have been maintaining it. For our use it seems to be doing its job pretty well.
It has been suggested that we look into replacing xml2po with either itstool or po4a; see this issue.
Now, since xml2po is working well for us, there is no hurry to change to something else. However, being able to use a third party package would free us from the burden of maintaining xml2po.
Some things to consider for using an external package:
- How well is it being maintained.
- Is it available on all our supported platforms.
- Does the package have other requirements.
- How much effort will it cost us to port our scripts.
- What will be the effect on our current translations.
Anything else to add?
