Open dialog size too big
The Open dialog is a little bigger than the screen. As a result, the modification times are truncated (minutes are invisible) and the Open button shows only the "O". The Resize command is dimmed. I can't drag any edge in. The Save As dialog is okay. The Open dialogs for other apps are okay, but I don't know which apps use the same technology for the dialog. In case the dialog's size was relative to that of gedit, I tried making the gedit window smaller, but it wouldn't let me. It's already at window size minus the desk environment's panels and the Restore button gets no response. I tried alt-click-dragging the title bar; this worked even when I canceled and reopened the Open dialog, but when I quit and restarted gedit the Open dialog was again oversized. I tried alt-F7 with the cursor on the title bar, but alt-F7 snapped the cursor into the middle of the window and dragging the window so I could reach the right edge and resize it failed because, in order to go to the right edge, I had to replace the move cursor with a pointer and then it didn't achieve the desired result. Alt-F8 worked but only during the gedit session; when I quit and restarted gedit, the dialog oversized as before. Ctrl-shift-f (which is for full-screen mode) did nothing. I have only one workspace; when I pressed the Windows logo key to go into Activities mode and moved my pointer to the far right, nothing happened, so I couldn't create a second workspace (I had hoped the dialog's right edge would be in the next workspace). /home//.config/gtk-2.0/gtkfilechooser.ini says "GeometryX=144"/"GeometryY=111"/"GeometryWidth=1152"/"GeometryHeight=708", which is much smaller than my display's resolution at 1440x900. dconf Editor > org > gtk > settings > file-chooser > window-size > "(1492, 845)" to "(1440, 845)" worked even past a quit and restart of gedit but then gedit reverted to the old setting. I considered applying StartupMode=cwd but its use is too questionable, per https://www.circuitousroot.com/artifice/programming/useful/cwd/index.html (as accessed 6-11-20). The problem persists past cold-reboots. This seems an old problem with various discussions about how to solve it, many of them failing, and that alone suggests it should be patched. I run Fedora 32 Linux, kept evergreen.
This overlaps with a separate problem, that of the Open dialog refusing further progress in the middle of navigation (#328 (closed)), so that I have to Cancel and start again a few times, making the same or more progress than the last time until I finally succeed. The overlap is this: If the Open dialog is fully within the window, I can't navigate, but if I Cancel and try again the dialog is oversized relative to the window, and then I usually can navigate.
I'd like the Open dialog to be the size of the screen or smaller.
