Description
Gnome needs to provide better support when an "Oh no..." event happens. The lack of event information is not acceptable.
It happened more frequently in the past. Then I upgraded Fedora 24 to Fedora 25 and started using Wayland. It worked fine on initial install. After applying security updates, this happened before the login screen would appear.
The screen displayed no information about what went wrong. (Or what went right which may have helped narrow down the problem.) Since the change to systemd, the system logs are a mess. There is no mechanism to erase the old log info to reduce the information overload. I searched the Internet for what to do when you see this message and found many pages where people were totally guessing. "After I did this.. this happened..." I did not find pages where Gnome told them what went wrong.
In the past, this happened because of a had sound card driver. Gnome could have told me "Something went wrong with sound" instead of the useless message it provided. This message is no better that simply having my desktop freeze. It is especially bothersome when it is something, like sound, which is not essential to the desktop.
At the very least, the "something went wrong" message can include instructions on where the error log is and how to read it. How can we users help improve the quality of the gnome desktop when the desktop is providing so little information?
