Irrecoverable freeze after logging out when gdm is enabled

Description
Created attachment 319292 Photo of the issue - black screen with cursor
Steps to reproduce:
- Enable gdm if it is not already (# systemctl enable gdm.service)
- Log out of any DE (# killall Xorg)
The system will freeze and cannot be recovered, as seen in the attachment. A black screen appears with only the cursor (Adwaita, not the default X cursor). I cannot access a TTY by pressing Ctrl-Alt-F(1-6). Happens on all both of these machines since the upgrade to 3.18:
-
Lenovo ThinkPad X220 i7-2640M @ 2.80 GHz 16 GB DDR3-1600 Crucial CT250BX100SSD1 (BX100 250GB SSD) Intel HD Graphics 3000
-
Toshiba Satellite E55t-A5320 i5-4200U @ 1.60 Ghz 12 GB DDR3-1600 Hitachi 500GB SATA III 5400RPM HDD Intel HD Grapics 4400
I don't know how to get a stack trace; the system does not respond to anything and a hard reboot must be triggered.
