Description
installed gnome-shell on an ubuntu 12.10 machine, and thought I'd got the whole way and swap out lightdm for gdm.
Unfortunately I'd frequently find the computer when returning to it after a break. My (amateur) diagnosis is a bug in suspend/resume, although it may be the screensaver.
Symptoms were, the screen would switch back on on pressing a key or wibbling the mouse, but it would show a black background, with the only feature being an active mouse cursor. The only way to recover (that I found) was to open up a separate shell and do a sudo service gdm restart
I've now switched back to lightdm, which seems to be doing fine. It's not as pretty though!
This was an intermittent bug, as suspend/resume would sometimes work flawlessly.
I'd be very happy to reinstall gdm, in order to catch the bug and send thru any debug/diagnostic info. Alternatively, pointers as to which log files to look thru and what kinds of messages to look for wld be much apprecated.
