Consider adding AVIF support
AVIF is an image format based on the AV1 video codec, see [its Wikipedia page](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AV1#AV1_Image_File_Format_(AVIF)) or the spec.
It is meant as a JPEG replacement, though a lossless mode is available. It supports modern image featrures such as HDR, wide gamut and ICC profiles.
Netflix has a presentation and a longer blog post with a comparison to JPEG and some explanation why they are pushing it.
It's supported by:
- Windows 10 (since May 2019)
- Darktable (since 3.0.1)
in progress:
- Firefox (so far experimental)
- Chrome
- GIMP (plugins exist)
not yet supported by:
The canoncial decoder is libavif,
So this looks like the next attempt to replace JPEG, like webp and JPEG2000 before it.
