Feature request: make highlighting in Evince more usable.
Summary: Please consider
- adding a keyboard shortcut for toggling highlighting OR
- adding a local "phone-style" popup, as Bijiben does (see attached screenshot).
My use case is as follows: Suppose I have a document with the following text:
Blah blah GNOME is really awesome.
I want to highlight "GNOME" and "awesome" this way:
Blah blah GNOME is really awesome.
How it works now (Gnome 3.22, Debian 9):
- My pointer is pointing somewhere around the "blah"
- I move the pointer to the "highlight" button (long trip) and click it
- I move the pointer to the "G" in "GNOME" (long trip) and release
- I drag the pointer until after the E (short trip)
- I go back to the "highlight button" (long trip) and click it
- I move the pointer back to the "a" in "awesome" (long trip)
- I drag the pointer to the "e" in "awesome" and release
This can be distressing if I have to highlight 10 short words in immediate succession, especially with very large displays.
Now, suppose the function of the "highlight" button can be replicated with a shortcut K. It would enable the following:
- My pointer is pointing somewhere around the "blah"
- I press the shortcut K with my free hand
- I move the pointer to the "G" in "GNOME" (a few pixels)
- I drag the pointer until after the E (short trip) and release
- I move the pointer to the "a" in "awesome" (short trip)
- I press the shortcut K with my free hand
- I drag the pointer to the "e" in "awesome" (short trip) and release
Alternately, suppose a popup with a "highlight" button appears locally after selecting text (see attached screenshot). It would enable the following:
- My pointer is pointing somewhere around the "blah"
- I move the pointer to the "G" in "GNOME" (a few pixels)
- I drag the pointer until after the E (short trip) and release
- The popup appears, I click "highlight" (a few pixels)
- I move the pointer to the "a" in "awesome" (short trip)
- I drag the pointer to the "e" in "awesome" (short trip) and release
- The popup appears, I click "highlight" (a few pixels)
This would make the experience much less frustrating and concentration-breaking for me, and more akin to using an highlighter on paper.
Thank you.
