Better app icon metaphor
We've been discussing changing the app icon metaphor for some time, primarily because
- it includes a UI element (cursor), which we try to avoid in app icons
- in order to avoid confusion with the real cursor the cursor on the icon is mirrored, which looks weird
- the metaphor is not great (where possible we're trying to use realistic physical objects)
Unfortunately there isn't a single clear physical metaphor used by most default web browsers across platforms, since most other browsers use abstract objects (e.g. Chrome, Edge) or a globe + something branded (e.g. Firefox). We can't do either of these, because we're trying to be generic.
The only realistic direction I can see for a nice physical metaphor is an object related to navigation, like e.g. Safari and Netscape use. I think something like this could work:
