Although not mandatory by the desktop file specification (see https://specifications.freedesktop.org/desktop-entry-spec/latest/ar01s06.html), Lintian (Debian package checker) complains when it is missing (see https://udd.debian.org/lintian-tag.cgi?tag=desktop-entry-lacks-keywords-entry). There is also a "GNOME Goal" to add keywords to application desktop files (see https://wiki.gnome.org/Initiatives/GnomeGoals/DesktopFileKeywords).
