CD Creator creates CD with empty files

Description
In Fedora14, using Applications -> System Tools -> CD/DVD Creator, which, from the Help function, would seem to be part of nautilus:
when I create (burn) a CD it puts the right directory structure on the CD, but all the files seem to be empty (that is, they show as the right size in a directory listing, but are filled with zeroes).
For example, when I start brasero from the command line, and create an iso, I get -rw-r--r--. 1 jeremy jeremy 239843328 Feb 21 18:00 brasero.iso
but doing the same using the CD/DVD Creator I get -rw-r--r--. 1 jeremy jeremy 2097152 Feb 21 18:10 brasero-0.iso
Yet I also get

When I burnt a disc it appeared that this is because all the files are filled with zeroes.
In fact with the loop mount as above, I get read errors [root@home2006 14th Birthday]# od -c p6120242.jpg od: p6120242.jpg: read error: Input/output error 0000000
But looking at the actual CD I get [jeremy@home2006 ~]$ od -c /media/disk/Andrew/Andrew's\ Photos/14th\ Birthday/p6120242.jpg 0000000 \0 \0 \0 \0 \0 \0 \0 \0 \0 \0 \0 \0 \0 \0 \0 \0 * 2432340 \0 \0 \0 2432343
(Doing du on the actual CD gives a similar result to the above, total size 235198 blocks, and you can see that a significant part of the CD is burnt)
