"circle" cursor is not a circle
this has been bothering us for a while...
the 'circle' cursor is not a "circle" at all, but a pointer (probably OK for a cursor) + a "no entry"-like sign (
what is the reasoning behind this?
With a circle
cursor I would expect the cursor to be... well, a circle.
In our software (Tcl/Tk, but don't ask) we have been using the circle
cursor as the icon for finding connectors (for connecting nodes).
This action is a positive action: the cursor is supposed to tell people that they now have focused and can proceed with their task.
This works well on macOS, Windows and Linux (the last only if you do not have an icon theme like adwaita installed).
If adwaita is used, things get messy: all of a sudden, the cursor indicates something forbidden (at least this is what the
Why?
Now I'm aware that adwaita is not the only icon theme that uses this semantics for the circle
cursor.
Unfortunately I haven't found any documents that would explain why a circle
cursor should have a negative association of forbiddenness.
- If there are widely accepted documents that justify this use, please point me to them.
- If there are none, would you consider turning the
circle
cursor into a circle ⃝ ?
