empathy-chat won't let me input text

Description
I'm using the Awesome window manager in Arch Linux. In a newly-opened empathy-chat, everything goes fine, until I switch to another desktop ('tag' in Awesome). When I switch back, the input box won't have focus--click in it won't show the cursor and typing does nothing. If there are new messages (shown in window title and the contact's icon) it won't disappear when the window gains focus.
I just update empathy (and some other packages including GTK3) from 3.2.2 to 3.4.1. Before the update, this never happened.
It seems that it's more likely to happen if after I switch away, there are new messages come (and unread). Switching between windows in the same tag does not help.
Version: 3.4.x
