Idea: show information about relevant locations such as search results, and prompts overlayed on the scroll bar
Visual Studio Code has a funky but effective scrollbar that uses colored indicators to show search results, the location of errors, and other such information:
Using a similar technique could provide an effective way of keeping oriented when searching and navigating the scrolback.
Variations and Extensions
- Parse compiler output and highlight compile commands to allow scrolling to the compile command that triggered some error.
- Show indicators next to the scrollbar, not on top of the scrollbar. This could allow the indicator area be used, for say, double-clicking to select all the output of a given command.
- Have keyboard shortcuts for moving jumping between highlighted locations (ITerm2 has Shift-Command-Up/Down to jump beween prompts.)
