Smart Health Card QR Code Support
Summary
Japan, Canada, and some US states have already implemented the Smart Health Card system, which allows users to easy add & share health information. The system is also natively supported on Apple's iPhones, within iOS's Health app. Microsoft, Google, Amazon, and many other private & public institutions have also signed on to support the initiative to use it as a way to allow the patient to easily import/export their vaccination info. It can also be used for many other health results like returned lab tests.
The specification is free to implement under a CC-BY 4.0 license, with the code available on Github. A reference implementation is available from the State of California's Github under a public domain license.
User Stories
Here's an example:
- A patient receives a vaccine with a smart health card qr code attached to the record; they use the app to easily add the info to the app, allowing them to show as proof of vaccination, or to show their doctor when reviewing which vaccines they may be overdue for.
- A patient gets lab results back with a long list of values (such as a lipid panel test), but also a smart health card qr code; rather than inputting all the numbers manually, they scan the code, and the information is quickly added to their records to keep track of.
