Explore wireframes as alternative to screenshots
I'd like to explore the idea of using simple wireframes as an alternative to screenshots for a lot of apps. Here's a very poor mockup of using one to call out the history area of the Calculator app:
Here I've used a simple grayscale color palette for the app, and a blue outline calls out the part of the window we're talking about. A clever person might be able to use SVG animations to make the border pulsate slightly.
This would add some visual appeal and make it easier to visually see what the help is talking about, while avoiding some of the pitfalls of screenshots that we've struggled with. In particular, if we avoid text, there's no need to translate. And these will be more resilient against changes in theme and other visual changes.
To do this on a large scale, we'd need to develop an SVG pattern library that people could use, along with a set of guidelines on how to create good wireframes with callouts.
