Looking for a consistent drag & drop for windows
First of all, I am a huge of the new changes of GNOME Shell. Mainly because of the better overview spatial organization and the improved touchpad navigation, that allows a more engaging UX experience overall. I think this diagram uploaded by @bertob shows it pretty well:
The only thing we miss looking at this, is how we rearrange multiple windows on multiple virtual desktops and this concern has been raised on issues #64 (closed), #70 (closed) and #72 (closed). I think that the proposal of issue #70 (closed) is not quite accurate because of the duplications of workspace thumbnails that breaks the spatial design and complicates the default UX of the new overview. Even more on the case of issue #72 (closed).
I think that a workspace thumbnail is needed, but it should only appear when you drag a window from the current default overview just like the current behaviour approved. But I also think that, once you drag a window, workspaces should have the same size and position that when you open the app grid for visual consistency. So the middle area between the workspaces (up) and the favorite apps (down) should show only windows and the workspaces should not be duplicated with two different sizes, so the spatial concept is respected and also we have more space for the windows. Then, if you select a different workspace, the windows of the workspace selected enters this middle area just like the current overview on GNOME 3.38. Then, if you click the app grid all the windows enters their respective workspace up and the space is used for the aplications icons as the GNOME team has designed. With this behavior we all can keep the great workflow of GNOME 3.38 with the engaging spatial design of GNOME 40. Sadly, I don´t know how to design the mockups, so I can´t show you all this proposal. But if you have any doubts I will try to explain it in a different way in the comments. And also sorry my English, I am Cuban.
