Inter as default interface font
The design team has been evaluating Inter as a default UI font for quite a while, but kept getting tripped up by using different versions/settings, seeing issues that others couldn't reproduce, etc.
To help track this, we're creating this initiative. This does not necessarily mean we're dead set on switching to Inter, but it gives us a space to clearly document the correct settings and any related issues across the GNOME stack.
Note that our testing of Inter can also just expose where we were doing weird, unique styling things for Cantarell specifically; those issues should be fixed regardless of whether we switch to Inter.
How to test
To ensure we're testing the same version of the font with the same settings:
-
Ensure you don't already have a different version of Inter installed; this can cause you to see/use the wrong version!
-
Download Inter 4.0 from GitHub (26.6 MB .zip)
-
Open the downloaded .zip (Files will extract it)
-
Open and install both
InterVariable.ttf
andInterVariable-Italic.ttf
with Fonts -
From a terminal, run:
gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.interface font-name 'Inter Variable 11'
-
Log out and back in to ensure everything uses the new font
To revert
In a terminal, run
gsettings reset org.gnome.desktop.interface font-name
then log out and back in.
Reporting issues
Please do not report issues here. This issue just tracks the initiative itself. To report issues:
- Find the correct repo for where you're seeing the issue; e.g. if it's in the Software app, report at https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-software/
- Include screenshots of Cantarell and Inter, if possible
- Include a link to this issue
Thank you!
Please note that this initiative is not the place to discuss other fonts; it is focused specifically on identifying and fixing any issues exposed by using Inter on GNOME.
