Create a committee for our Internship programs
TL;DR: This is a proposal to create a committee to centralize our activities around onboarding new contributors and interns.
For many years now I have been part of the GSoC GNOME Admins group that organizes our participation in Google Summer of Code yearly. At the same time, our participation in Outreachy was initially organized by Marina and is now mine and Kristi's responsibilities. Also, programs such as the GNOME Internships have existed in the past and could make a return if we manage to secure funding.
The members collaborating in these efforts have changed a few times in the last years, leaving us under-resourced in a couple of internship seasons. While I don't believe the formalization of the committee will fix this issue alone, it is a good step towards formalizing what volunteers have been doing over the years under the Board's supervision and requirements, bringing to the Board's attention the importance of sustaining these programs yearly.
Given the similarities of the work needed for organizing our participation in those programs (and potentially new internship opportunities), I believe it would be beneficial to centralize this in a well defined committee that abides to our Expectations for Committees.
Here's a draft committee charter, to be voted on by the Board.
Draft Internship Committee charter
The GNOME Internship Committee is a committee of the GNOME Foundation Board of Directions. It is responsible for promoting, organizing, and conducting internship programs such as Outreachy, Google Summer of Code, and the GNOME Internships.
The GNOME Internship Committee is granted the power to apply for internship programs on behalf of the GNOME Foundation, and select mentors and interns that participate in these programs.
The GNOME Internship Committee is expected to:
- Keep the GNOME Foundation and the GNOME community informed of the status of internship programs.
- Promote GNOME's participation in internship programs.
- Recruit mentors and participants (interns).
- Organize and promote activities aiming at integrating interns with our community.
- Help fundraiser activities aiming at increasing our internship capacity.
