GitLab Re-Organization GUADEC Brainstorm
Context
We have brainstormed a number of small changes to the existing GitLab hierarchy that we think will improve our long-term community growth on GitLab by making it easier for teams and new users to navigate.
Our proposal aims to give teams more control over the organization of their projects without compromising the security of other projects.
Before making any changes, we'd like to get feedback from stakeholders and community members. We aim to make any changes within the next month.
Proposal
The new hierarchy would be structured as follows. Only root folders and subfolders that would move are included in this list.
Current hierarchy
- GNOME
-
Community
- Engagement
- LAS GNOME
- GUADEC
- GNOME Asia
- Design
- Translations
- Developer Portal
- Ubuntu
- Purism
- Fedora workstation
- Board
- Engagement
- World
- Infrastructure
- Archive
Proposed New Hierarchy
- GNOME: not changing. This holds our release software projects and has strict permissions.
-
GNOME Project: new. This is a catch all group for assets, teams, etc that are needed for release software but don't themselves belong to a specific software project.
- UX/UI Design
- Translations
-
GNOME Foundation: This is where projects related to the GNOME Foundation, its employees, and board members. This will have strict permissions for the most part.
- Board
-
GNOME Community: Renamed from "Community". This would be used for activities centered around community growth.
- Marketing
- Events
- GUADEC
- GNOME Asia
- LAS GNOME
-
GNOME Infrastructure: Rename from Infrastructure. This holds all of GNOME infrastructure projects.
- websites, GitLab, wikis, etc
- Developer Portal (moved from "Community")
-
Community Partners: New These projects are currently housed under our "Community" group because they have more more permissions than the "World" projects. This separation makes it clear that they are community partners.
- Ubuntu, Purism, etc
-
Hosted Projects: Rename from World. These are 3rd party projects that are hosted on GNOME infrastructure. The current, "World," isn't the most clear.
- Fractal, GIMP, etc
- Archive: No change.
