Ignore monitor's physical dimensions and assume square pixels

I'm using Fedora 27 with totem 3.26.0 and I have experienced some annoying behavior by totem: It displays videos with a slightly wrong aspect ratio, every video is a bit to narrow with a smaller width than expected.
This happened to me with earlier versions to and was somehow fixed with the update to Fedora 27, but somehow it started happening again.
What I've tried:
I deleted the following directories: ~/.cache/gstreamer-1.0/ ~/.cache/totem/ ~/.local/share/gstreamer-1.0/ ~/.local/share/totem/ ./.config/totem/
$ find ~ -iname "totem" # reports nothing afterwards
The totem aspect ratio setting is set to 'auto', other values do work, but won't help either.
I created a grid-pattern test image (attached) that I converted to a mp4 file. ffprobe confirms, that the video is indeed 1920x1080 (16:9). But totem displays the video as 1800x1080 (15:9). VLC on the other hand displays the video correctly.
