We should load images and scale them simultaneously using gdk_pixbuf_new_from_file_at_size() or gdk_pixbuf_new_from_file_at_scale(). I'm hopeful this will be a significant performance win.

This looks to not be a performance win unless the jpeg is resized down by a multiple of 2. By switching to bilinear scaling rather than hyper, the currently pipeline is roughly similar in performance to gdk_pixbuf_new_from_file_at_size().
