Searchable id: yorba-bug-7340
Original author: Fabian Rodriguez
Original description:
When the user selects media and attempts to publish it, Shotwell will hide web sharing plugins that don't support all the selected media types. This is frustrating because it's difficult to know why a particular service is unavailable -- is the plugin disabled, not installed, or what?
A better solution (as explained below) is to show all plugins, but when one is selected that doesn't support the media types, displays a message explaining why.
Original description:
Using Shotwell 0.14.1-3 (Debian testing), 64-bit.
When videos are part of the selection to be published, Piwigo isn't shown as an option to upload.
The Piwigo option should be shown and if/when there is a reason why videos can't be uploaded, show an appropriate error/warning message.
It took me a while searching to come across this explanation:

This is really a duplicate of #7341. Since #7341 is a little more clearly worded as to the nature of the problem and has a comment suggesting a fix, I'm marking this ticket as the dupe. The problem, as described in #7341, is that the Piwigo Connector plugin doesn't identify itself as supporting videos.
Another question here is whether we should hide publishing destinations when they contain unsupported media types. Assume there were, say, a PhotosOnlyWorld.com publishing plugin for Shotwell that identified itself as not supporting the video media type. The behavior right now would be this this: whenever you try to publish a selection containing even one video, PhotosOnlyWorld.com would not be listed in the service selector drop-down in the publishing dialog. This is by design. It's another question entirely whether this is really the best behavior or not. We could, for example, show the unsupported services in the service selected drop down, but then when one was selected, display an error pane saying something like "Some of the media items you've selected for publishing are not supported by this service."
If we want to change the above-described behavior, we should open another ticket for it that applies to the entire publishing subsystem.

In Shotwell+Piwigo extended with Video context, I would expect to be able to upload pictures and video, not other types - as opposed to Photosonlyworld.com. This is specifically about the dialog hiding the plugin silently, apologies if my other bug report may have brought confusion.
Since version 1.4 any media type is supported:
http://piwigo.org/bugs/view.php?id=79
Rendering the video or doing anything with it is on Piwigo's side, and it's only done via plugins (not part of core):
http://piwigo.org/bugs/view.php?id=512
So anyone wanting video for Piwigo will get the plugin, and want to upload videos - if Shotwell does not support this in its plugin, it should display a clear message in the publish dialog, or gray out the option, etc. instead of hiding it. If and when Shotwell's Piwigo plugin supports this is the scope of 7341 which is not a duplicate of this one.
"We could, for example, show the unsupported services in the service selected drop down, but then when one was selected, display an error pane saying something like "Some of the media items you've selected for publishing are not supported by this service."
Actually something more precise along the lines of "this plugin only allows uploading pictures, you have selected other media types" would be more helpful.

- Subject changed from Piwigo publishing: Piwigo is silently hidden when trying to upload videos to Don't hide web sharing plugins when unsupported media is selected
- Description updated (diff)
- Category set to web-sharing
- Status changed from Duplicate to Open
I think you make a good argument, Fabian. I'm revising this ticket, as it affects most of our web sharing plugins, not just Piwigo.
