Original description:
It is recommended to encrypt your home folder, for many reasons you know.
One of the easiest way is to use ecryptfs (a simple checkbox during Ubuntu installation process, a less easier but still not difficult in other distributions). I enabled it.
But shotwell does not work correctly on an encrypted folder: it rescans the whole library which takes 100% I/O access and almost freeze the computer during several minutes.
I talked about this in the mailing list the first time here:
http://lists.yorba.org/pipermail/shotwell/2011-October/003246.html
I discovered the encrypted volume was the problem for shotwell, thanks to Lucas Beeler:

I still want to keep trace of this problem in the bug tracker, I think a workaround would be great for people using encrypted volumes (which is recommended).
