Original description:
Because some Coolpix models apparently zero out some fields gPhoto relies on to know how to talk to the camera, connecting to them doesn't usually work. This should have a FAQ entry, along with a proposed workaround (pull the storage media from the camera and use an external reader).

Proposed text:
Shotwell doesn't seem to be able to connect to my Nikon camera. Why?¶
Unfortunately, this is an interaction between a bug with some Nikon models (most notably the Coolpix series) and a limitation of GPhoto; for further details, please see GPhoto's tracker on Sourceforge, most notably [1072668](ht tp://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=1072668&group_id=8874&a tid=108874) and [3018517](http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail &aid=3018517&group_id=8874&atid=108874) . Currently, the easiest way to work around this is to remove the media from the camera and connect it to the computer through a card reader.

Clinton,
Looks good. I'd recommend the following revisions and simplifications for a non-technical audience many of whom may not be native English speakers:
This problem results from an interaction between some Nikon models (most notably the Coolpix series) and GPhoto (make this a link to http://www.gphoto.org), a common Linux utility Shotwell uses to access digital cameras. More information about this problem is available through GPhoto's bug tracker (issues 1072668 and 3018517).
While there isn't yet a solution to this problem, there is a workaround: simply remove the memory card from the camera and connect it to your computer through a card reader.

We might consider adding Fuji cameras to this; it seems that the X10 can't be locked or talked to correctly by GPhoto either (http://redmine.yorba.org/issues/4512).
