iPod claims to be empty after editing

Description
I used Rhythmbox 3.4.1-2ubuntu1 to copy music files from an 3rd generation iPod nano onto my computer. I did not write any files to the iPod or intentionally modify it in any way, but when I unmounted the iPod, and tried to use it, it appears empty. I plugged it back into the computer, and can see all the files with a file browser or in Rhythmbox, but iPod itself claims to be empty and have no songs.
I also mentioned this bug at https://askubuntu.com/questions/934877/how-to-restore-ipod-database-messed-up-by-rhythmbox?noredirect=1, and it was reported by other users at https://askubuntu.com/questions/541941/after-synchronizing-my-ipod-nano-6g-with-banshee-or-rhythmbox-it-appears-empty?noredirect=1
