File format extension auto-completion

Description
When saving a file, it would be cool if the extension of the file, which would correspond with the file format, would be automatically added. Example 1:
In OpenOffice 1.1, create a new oowrite document, edit it, then click on "save as...", and you don't need to manually add the extension, which is inferred from the "Format: --default--" widget.
Example 2:
In Gimp, the extension is autowritten in the text field when choosen from the "Format: -- choose one--" widget.
I would propose something more similar to Example 1, so that when saving "mydb" with the default "Bibliographic Type: -- BibTeX--" widget, you don't have to type "mydb.bibtex".
What do you think? Alternatives?
Albert.
PD: Can Frederic or any other "pyblioguru" point me out to the place in the code where they think this should be done? Or what in the code I should not be tinkering?
