Add docs/debian-packaging, a doc explaining how to do pitivi packages for PPA.

parent 0c1f03bc
This is the procedure to build custom packages that we upload on the
gstreamer-developers launchpad PPA.
GStreamer and Pitivi packages are maintained in the pkg-gstreamer repository on
alioth. The first step to build a custom version of the pitivi package is to
check out the source package from alioth:
~/packages$ svn co svn://
This will checkout the pitivi debian source package in ~/packages/pitivi.
Do the modifications you need to do to debian/control (change dependencies for
example), debian/rules etc and then add a changelog entry to debian/changelog

pitivi (0.11.3-1) experimental; urgency=low
Here we're doing a build for intrepid (current stable). As you can see in the
first line of the changelog entry you need to specify a package version.
Say that the latest version in the changelog is 0.11.3-1 and that you're
packaging (unreleased git snapshot as of 09/03/2009). Considering that
the next official package version pushed by the distro is going to be 0.13.1-1,
you want to create your package version so that 0.11.3-1 < $your_version <
0.13.1-1. In this case the version would be You can use
dpkg to compare versions:
~/packages$ dpkg --compare-versions "0.11.3-1" \< ""; echo $?
~/packages$ dpkg --compare-versions "" \< "0.13.1-1"; echo $?
(0 means that the expression is true, 1 is false)
Next get the pitivi tarball and put it in
~/packages/pitivi_$version.orig.tar.gz. In this case
At this point build the source package with:
debuild -S
If everything worked correctly, now you should have
pitivi_0.13.0.1~git20090309-1.dsc and pitivi_0.13.0.1~git20090309-1_source.changes
in ~/packages and you're ready to upload to the PPA.
To upload the source package so that it gets build on launchpad you use dput.
This is the content of my ~/ file:

incoming = ~alessandro.decina/ubuntu/

allow_unsigned_uploads = 0
fqdn =
method = ftp
incoming = ~gstreamer-developers/ubuntu/

allow_unsigned_uploads = 0
Finally run:
~/packages$ dput gstreamer-developers pitivi_0.13.0.1~git20090309-1_source.changes
You will get notified by launchpad about the build status. It usually takes a
few minutes before launchopad accepts the upload. After that you can also
monitor the build at
