Suggested improvement to Nautilus > 3.26.x
Good day sirs. I am following the development of the Ubuntu Unity Remix team which promises to bring Unity 7 DE to Ubuntu 18.04 for those of us who want it. I have noticed throughout the development of Nautilus, the flexibility in handling of desktop icons has reduced the number of sizes as specified in
"nautilus-3.26.0/src/nautilus-icon-info.h" as follows:
#define NAUTILUS_CANVAS_ICON_SIZE_SMALL 48
#define NAUTILUS_CANVAS_ICON_SIZE_STANDARD 64
#define NAUTILUS_CANVAS_ICON_SIZE_LARGE 96
#define NAUTILUS_CANVAS_ICON_SIZE_LARGER 128
#define NAUTILUS_CANVAS_ICON_SIZE_LARGEST 256
48px is far too large on a 1280x1024px screen, and 256px occupies nearly 1/8 of screen width at 1920x1080px. The large sizes are desirable for the vision impaired and so worth maintaining.
May I respectfully suggest that adding two new defines will make Nautilus far more effective going forward, fulfilling both the desires and needs of all kinds of users.
#define NAUTILUS_CANVAS_ICON_SIZE_SMALLEST 24
#define NAUTILUS_CANVAS_ICON_SIZE_SMALLER 32
The new sizes need only be accessible via gsettings if there is no incentive to modify the GUI.
Thank you for your consideration,
