inconsistent thumbnails preview lost to generic icon
Affected Version
- Version: nautilus 46.1
- Distribution: Arch Linux 64bits
- This behavior started with Gnome 46.0 in March and continued in version 46.1
- Same behavior on 2 different PCs running same version: laptop hd display 1920×1080 and workstation 4k display 3840×2160
Use Cases
Since version 46 of nautilus the thumbnails preview works partially. When I move or copy a bunch of files in another directory all the thumbnails are created promptly. But when I come back later to consult the directory content some thumbnails are replaced by a generic icon. If I refresh nautilus (F5 or Ctrl+R), a few randomly generic icons are getting back their thumbnail preview but most don't. See attached image (4k screenshot reduced by 50%).
Available Workarounds
I emptied the thumbnails cache (~/.cache/thumbnails) by removing completely the cache directory and the same behavior reappeared rapidly. The thumbnails are first completely recreated but a few visit later with nautilus and thumbnails are randomly lost to their generic icon. I even tried nautilus thumbnail generator at https://github.com/yourusername/nautilus-thumbnail-generator.git but the same behavior persists.
Difficulties
I'm a very long time user of Gnome (since it's debut around 2000) and this is a sad regression for me, first time I see this problem in nautilus.
Thanks for the time involved to answer me, I hope I'm not alone with this problem.
