Show preview of archives before extracting
Hello!
I opened a discussion in GNOME Discourse suggesting a change with how archives are managed in Nautilus (https://discourse.gnome.org/t/open-an-archive-as-a-folder-with-nautilus-without-automatically-unzipping-it/13328).
Indeed, when an archive is clicked by the user, the content is directly extracted by default, unless the user has installed the GNOME archive manager. The problem is that - if I'm not mistaken - the latter is potentially being discontinued... It is very frustrating to have to extract an archive every time rather than just browsing it to see its contents; it triggers an unwanted operation that can be quite long depending on the type of archive / computer power, and even quite counter-intuitive (especially for users who used Windows before)
So what I would suggest is to allow the user (e.g. with an option in the preferences window) to choose between browsing an archive as a folder or extracting it every time. Another suggested option would be to have a “preview” step on double click before proceeding with the extraction (or cancelling it).. This would also avoid depending on an external program, maybe disappearing, and that I personally had trouble finding and reinstalling after removing it.
Feel free to tell me if you disagree with such a suggestion
