Nautilus (type-ahead-find and recursive search): let user decides
Use cases
I gave the opportunity to a new Nautilus. For a quite long time (two years). I forced myself to accept the new way of searching files (yeah, this sounds like classical type-ahead-find vs. recursive search debate). However, after two years, I noticed that I started to completely ignore the search function, and use a mouse (scrolling and clicking). No search at all. That is why I am writing this request for old/new feature.
The case is: I cannot rely on the new approach of searching files:
- many similar files are found in the directory,
- choosing to search only current directory, I lose the option to search all directories (later on)
- "not responding issue" in many situations
- as you type and even wait, results are constantly moving in the list, so selecting the right file becomes the nightmare (I always click on the wrong file)
- I like "structure" and to know in which directory I am, and with this new feature I lose this control (for example many folders I have, can contain "Archive" as subfolder)
- All improvements regarding faster search or to sort files in current directory first were more than welcome, but they did not solve this issue
However, I also believe many users can rely on this new feature and they are enjoying the full benefits of this new feature. I just can't. And many other people can't.
I hope we all can agree with my last sentence. There is no need to create any discussion regarding my personal dislike of this new feature. Everything is already said.
Desired behavior
Allow users to select the option he/she prefers.
Why can't the GNOME team implement both options? Default option: recursive search debate; but I can change this in preference dialog? Why can't we choose? What is stopping us to allow this to be an option?
Benefits of the solution
Large user base, as currently many users are installing modified versions of Nautilus or alternative software.
Possible drawbacks
Many old users might come back and start using the Nautilus again, which could result in greater bug reporting and probably an unnecessary discussion. So if they are not your target audience, ignore this new feature.
