Affected version
- Nightly flatpak: Can't test it because I was too lazy to fix
error: The application org.gnome.NautilusDevel/x86_64/master requires the runtime org.gnome.Platform/x86_64/3.34 which was not found
at 04:50. - Other:
1:3.34.1-1ubuntu1
Steps to reproduce
i)
- Install and run Gnome Files.
- Press Ctrl + F to open up the finder bar (or in whichever way you call it),
- Press Ctrl + L.
ii)
- Install and run Gnome Files.
- Pressing Ctrl + L to open up the location bar (address bar).
- Press Ctrl + L again.
Current behavior
i) Ctrl + L does not show the location bar (address bar).
ii) Pressing Ctrl + L while location bar is active does not bring any graphical changes to the app.
Expected behavior
i) Instead, the address bar should have appeared and the finder bar should have been gone.
ii) Pressing Ctrl + L while location bar is active should deactivate it because Ctrl + F does the same.
Additional information
i) This is incoherent with the behaviour of Ctrl + F when the location bar is active, where it displays the finder bar instead of the location bar.
ii) Toggling Ctrl + F to find for seems like a good idea, as it is more responsive than the previous behaviour of opening up a find menu, but not toggling back. This will be more intuitive for the newer generation who are more used to responsiveness. It also gives the advantage of not having to reach out for the Esc key on the far corner of the keyboard which seems to be overused. I came to believe this is a feature that should more widely be used.
However, the consistency of behaviour seems to be an issue.
The first is the consistency within the app with other possibly togglable shortcuts. The only one that comes up on top of my head is Ctrl + L. It does not toggle the location bar even within Gnome Files. This is, UX-wise, not desirable a behaviour.
"15. Auto Updated" Second is the consistency with other apps, although this is not something amendable. I personally did not remember having experienced this feature in any other app, including Gnome apps. After trying out a few Gnome apps, I did find that Gnome Books and Settings actually have this toggling feature for Ctrl + F. Of the apps I tried, Geary, Tweaks, Calendar, To-Do and Gedit did not. I believe it would be nice if anyone added this feature onto those projects, as it will lead to consistency within Gnome apps and therefore a better UX. (Although to prevent isolation of UX, it would be better if it were used more elsewhere as such as in VS Code.) This part is too irrelevant to the project itself.
Now that I think of it, it seems obvious that this should have been two separate issues but I think this is trivial enough an issue and I'm lazy enough not to pay attention to this issue for today.
