Mouse button assignment suggestion
xbindkeys and xdotool were handy for reassigning mouse buttons and assigning mouse keys in the case of mice with lots of buttons. Those X tools no longer work under wayland/mutter. One of the things I have always used mouse button reassignment for was to set the middle button to be double click. Over the course of a day that saves a lot of clicking. The mice here also have extra keys and I could set them up for whatever helped get the work done.
Currently in Gnome the gnome-control-center has a few mouse controls, but no button assignment capability. Gnome-tweaks has the ability to turn middle button Paste on or off. So I wrote suggestions to both groups that it would be very nice if they could provide a way for people to assign their mouse buttons to whatever functions would help them. I gave a short list of examples: (double click, paste, page up, and page down). Here are the links:
gnome-control-center#156 (closed)
As I have looked through the gnome schemas I know there are some other mouse button controls sprinkled around, but it would be very nice to have mouse button controls in one place that would have global effect unless someone specifically switched one of the others away from a nul default. This can not happen though unless mutter supports it.
My suggestion for mutter is to add the capability to mutter that will allow gnome-control-center to provide users with the ability to assign or reassign mouse buttons to a range of functions including my favorite double click.
Thanks for your time reading this and Have a Great Day!
