Some UI Animations Cause Inappropriately High CPU Spikes
GNOME Shell: 3.28.2 | Mutter: 3.28.2 | Affects: Vanilla GNOME Session and Ubuntu 18.04 | CPU: Intel Celeron N2830 | RAM: 8GB
Hovering over dash icons cause the CPU utilization to increase up to 55%, but the one in particular that has the most impact on daily use is the Applications Overview (App Grid) "spring" animation. It can easily raise CPU usage to nearly 90%. I believe this has something to do with resource utilization because when another CPU intensive task is running, almost every frame is dropped from the App Grid spring animation. These issues are present on both X.Org and Wayland, but even worse on Wayland.
