Fonts look blurrier when using Wayland fractional scaling protocol
As the title says, Wayland fractional scaling protocol makes the fonts look blurrier. Disabling it with the GDK_DEBUG=gl-no-fractional environment variable make the fonts look crisp and clear again. This only affects GTK4 applications.
Steps to reproduce:
- Enable fractional scaling with
gsettings set org.gnome.mutter experimental-features "['scale-monitor-framebuffer']"
- Scale monitor to a non-integer value
- Set GDK_DEBUG=gl-no-fractional environment variable
- Open any GTK4 application
System info:
Arch Linux
GNOME 46
GTK 4.14.1
2560x1600
Source Code Pro for Monospace text, Cantarell for everything else
Subpixel antialiasing with Slight hinting
Screenshots with 150% scaling:
Nautilus: First ss is with the default settings, second is with GDK_DEBUG=gl-no-fractional
GNOME Tweaks: First ss is with the default settings, second is with GDK_DEBUG=gl-no-fractional
