Interrupting screen dimming partly locks session

Affected version

Fedora 36 gnome-shell-42.0-2.fc36.x86_64 mutter-42.0-3.fc36.x86_64 Affects both Xorg and Wayland

Bug summary

Interrupting screen dimming causes system to freeze

Steps to reproduce

  1. Interrupt screen dimming

What happened

We're observing different effects on different machines. It varies between following:

  • unresponsive top panel
  • other window not selectable
  • no hover-over effect for buttons in top bar
  • click on "Activities" in upper left corner - does not switch to overview mode
  • right mouse button on desktop - context menu does not show up
  • selecting buttons in the currently selected window - works (gnome-control-center)
  • selecting buttons in the currently selected window - does not work (firefox)
  • in some cases even completely frozen screen

These problems disappear after using keyboard - eg. pressing the Super button or just simply typing something.

What did you expect to happen

No issues and behavior differences after interrupted screen dimming.
